Sugar Bowl - Royal Gorge is great for families and adventure seekers. It is in the Lake Tahoe area but just far enough away that it is uncrowded. It has varied terrain, 4 mountain peaks, short lift lines, and many cross country trails as this is the largest cross country resort in North America. There is also a very good ski team and academy.
The best place to stay in this area is the Inn at Sugar Bowl. It's ski in / ski out, gets good reviews and skiers love it here.

The Westin Monache is set within the village at Mammoth. It has spa tubs, breakfast, ski rentals, free airport shuttle, and excellent reviews from past guests. Get more information and see the latest reviews.
A great family resort, Sierra Nevada Resort is downtown Mammoth Lakes. It has 3 great restaurants, ski and snowboard rentals, whirlpool, firepit, a spa and childrens activities. Big Bear is another great ski resort. Click the link above to read all about it.
Dodge Ridge is another great ski resort. It's got 67 trails and is just east of Sonora. There are 5 terrain parks and it works for skiers of different skill levels. Pinecrest Lake Resort is the closest to the ski area but reviews are just okay.
Pinecrest Chalet gets quite good reviews. It works for groups, has friendly staff and offers group ski discounts.
Lazy Z Resort always gets good reviews. It's family-owned and operated and located in Twain Harte. It's on the more rustic side and doesn't have a ton of amenities.
Bear Valley Ski Resort is in the Central Sierra Mountains between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. There are lots of runs for skiing and snowboarding as well as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and more.
The main place to stay here are the Bear Valley Cabins and Lodges. You can also stay at the Bear Valley Lodge but at the time is writing, reviews for this spot are just okay.
