History: The Tortuga Beach Club Resort on Sanibel Island Florida is a luxury resort with a rich history and heritage. The resort was founded in the early 1900s by William J. Davis, an entrepreneur from Chicago who saw the potential for a luxury resort on this pristine barrier island. In the 1930s, Davis’ son-in-law, Walter J. Haines, Jr., took over ownership of the property and it became known as “The Haines”.
In 1993, The Haines was purchased by its current owners, George Fertitta III and his wife Janice Fertitta. They renamed it “Tortuga Beach Club” and embarked on a major renovation project that included adding new guest rooms, suites and villas.
