Skiing Paradise: The Top Canadian Resorts this Season

Canada, the canvas of a snow-dusted dreamscape,” I had whispered to myself, all those years ago, when I first beheld its postcard-perfect peaks. A snowbound realm that would hold me captive - in the most beguiling way, of course - for many winters to come.

Whistler VillageWhistler Village

In those days, I was still a wide-eyed New Yorker, trying to make it as a travel writer, painting landscapes with my words. Now, as I stood atop Mont Tremblant's highest peak, the sun breaking through a chink in the cloud cover, I felt a flicker of that old excitement, a sense of discovery like an unexpected gift.

Mont Tremblant, Quebec:

Renowned for its European ski town vibes minus the exorbitant transatlantic airfare, Mont Tremblant offers a family-friendly resort located just 90 minutes from Montreal. It promises excellent nightlife right next to the slopes and diverse terrain suitable for all levels. However, be aware of the potential for overwhelming weekend crowds.

Best suited for: Intermediate skiers USP: The picturesque Quebecois village and the blend of French-Canadian culture. Pros: Wide variety of terrain, family-friendly activities, ski-in/ski-out accommodations. Cons: May get crowded during peak season.

Mont Tremblant, Quebec

Looking down, the intricate tapestry of Mont Tremblant unfolded. Pine trees, cloaked in fresh snow, formed a startling white contrast to the cobalt sky above. It was a resort best suited for intermediate skiers, much like me. The mountain trails, while offering some hair-raising challenges, felt manageable. I would remember the daring zigzags and heart-stopping drops that had me shrieking with joy, the adrenaline cocktail that left me buzzing long after.

Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia:

Whistler Blackcomb: A Skiing GiantWhistler Blackcomb, British Columbia:

Yet, amidst these snow-draped giants, my heart always yearned for Whistler Blackcomb, an oasis of winter sports located in the heart of British Columbia. After a breathtakingly scenic drive along the Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver, I arrived at this paradise. The unrelenting snowfall, the thrill of navigating Whistler's alpine bowls, and the heart-racing descents of Blackcomb's glaciated terrains formed a symphony of adventure that resonated with my daredevil spirit.

One might think these frosty adventures could chill my tropical heart, but every trembling leaf, every stolen sunrise, every track left on unblemished snow, warmed me. And as the years rolled by, my narrative kept evolving, just like the ever-changing silhouettes of those majestic peaks.

Best suited for: All levels USP: Largest ski resort in North America with a wide array of terrain, bars, and eateries. Pros: Two mountains to choose from, consistently high snowfall, lively après-ski scene. Cons: Can be expensive, popular therefore can get crowded.

As the largest ski resort in North America, Whistler Blackcomb reigns supreme with an ultimate ski village experience. The resort offers a diverse array of impressive terrain and a bustling après ski scene. Although it is considered an expensive destination, its accessibility from Vancouver and comprehensive amenities make it an irresistible choice for many.

If you're asking why you should ski Whistler Blackcomb, consider this: it blends two mountainous terrains into one epic adventure with over 200 runs serviced by 37 lifts. This ski haven accommodates everyone, from novice skiers to extreme sport aficionados. It's easy to see why it is considered one of the best ski resorts worldwide, with terrains ranging from inbounds backcountry, glaciers, and tree trails to 5 terrain parks.

Banff Sunshine, Alberta:

Once the snow-cloaked majesty of Tremblant was thoroughly explored, it was time to traverse the Canadian Rockies to a haven called Banff Sunshine. As the plane descended into Calgary, the enormity of the Rockies stretching beyond the horizon was humbling. A shuttle ride later, I was snug in the rustic charm of Banff Sunshine Village, a welcoming cocoon amidst the icy wilderness. With more advanced terrains than Tremblant, it proved a delightful challenge. My crowning glory there was conquering Delirium Dive, the infamous off-piste route. The exhilaration of that victory was only rivaled by the comforting warmth of hot cocoa by a roaring fireplace in the village afterward.

Red Mountain Resort, British Columbia:

When my cravings for a less frequented, more localized experience escalated, I found solace in Red Mountain Resort. A journey to Rossland, a quaint mining town, was the first leg of my adventure. I recalled the adrenaline-infused thrill as I wove my way through legendary tree runs, clung to sheer cliffs, and navigated treacherous steeps. While the resort offered less for beginner skiers, for someone like me, it was a haven.

Best suited for: Advanced skiers and snowboarders USP: A hidden gem with a small-town vibe and vast, uncrowded terrain. Pros: Large off-piste area, steep terrain, feels less commercialized. Cons: Less suitable for beginners, fewer dining and nightlife options.

Review: A Symphony of Snow: My Mont Tremblant Sojourn

A Symphony of Snow: My Mont Tremblant Sojourn

As my flight descended towards Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, the plane's window framed a sea of white. Below lay a canvas of powdery snow, interrupted only by the black veins of roadways cutting across the landscape. This was the beginning of my snowy sojourn to Mont Tremblant, a world-renowned ski resort in Quebec, Canada.

Even the biting chill of the Quebec winter, nipping at my cheeks as I left the airport, couldn't freeze my thrill. Bundled in multiple layers, I hopped into a pre-arranged shuttle service for the two-hour ride to Mont Tremblant

As the city's urban sprawl gave way to towering pines frosted with snow, I felt as if I was driving through a Christmas card. The shuttle's wheels crunched over the snow-covered road, carving our path towards the world-class ski resort.

When we reached Mont Tremblant, I was greeted by the charming village nestled at the foot of the towering mountain. Colored rooftops painted a striking contrast against the snow-white backdrop, their bright hues reminiscent of candy sprinkles on a frosted cake.

My accommodations were cozy and rustic, offering splendid views of the alpine scenery. The scent of a crackling fire welcomed me into the warm embrace of my cabin, and the anticipation for the following day's adventure kept me up late into the night.

The next morning, I found myself strapped into my skis, the biting cold making my cheeks rosy, but I was ready. The gondola ride to the top of the mountain was a visual spectacle, with panoramic views of snow-capped trees stretching out as far as the eye could see. I felt on top of the world, a feeling only rivaled by the exhilarating descent that followed.

Skiing down the slopes of Mont Tremblant was like gliding through a dream. The feeling of the wind rushing past my face, the sound of skis slicing through the snow, and the adrenaline pumping through my veins - it was a sensory overload of the best kind. Each slope, from the challenging to the beginner-friendly, provided a unique experience, testing and exciting in equal measure.

Away from the slopes, I discovered a wealth of other activities. One evening, I decided to try the resort's Scandinavian-style baths, a delightful hot-cold-relax ritual that promised to rejuvenate my tired muscles. Following the attendant's advice, I started with a dip in the hot pool before plunging into the heart-stopping cold plunge pool. The final step - relaxing in the cozy warmth of the relaxation area, wrapped in a plush robe - was pure bliss.

Mont Tremblant wasn't just about the snow and slopes; it was a microcosm of  life. The village was abuzz with a medley of enticing aromas from local eateries and the warm glow of boutique shops offering an array of charming keepsakes.

My week in Mont Tremblant flew by, filled with endless ski runs, breathtaking views, and unforgettable experiences. I had arrived a curious visitor and left with a piece of Mont Tremblant embedded in my heart. It's a place that suits the adventurous and leisure-seeking alike, a place that turns a simple ski vacation into a lifelong memory.

As for those seeking something different, I heard whispers of a little gem further west - Whistler, British Columbia, known for its expansive terrain and world-class facilities. Maybe next year?

And as my return flight lifted off, carrying me away from my winter wonderland, I knew one thing for certain - Mont Tremblant, with its snow-cloaked charm, would be a siren call hard to resist
